Portal Infranet Web Kit
IA Information Architecture Challenge:
Assist UI designers in mapping a user workspace for the self-service account access for Internet Service Providers customers (end users). This map will be used to create a new tool specifically designed to assist the ISP customers.

IA Solution:
We mapped user actions to create a landing page with the most pertinent account information (account overview) with links to detail pages.

We determined the user experience required

  • an account overview screen
  • the ability to see account usage by invoice or search criteria
  • the ability to manage the account (like changing password)
  • the ability to see and add (purchase) additional products
User Experience Challenge:
Assist in designing the user experience for the workspace for the self-service account access for Internet Service Providers customers (end users). Typical end user tasks include viewing current balance, viewing last invoice, look up of account activity of a time frame, viewing account offers.

The application will be customized and re-branded by each ISP (Portal's customers). Create a series of mockups for validation and usability testing. Observe usability tests of user scenarios. Use results to validate or fine-tune each design iteration.

Solution:
Working closely with Portal software engineers, we designed a customizable screen layout including Portal logo on a background illustration for sample of possible branding for ISPs using Java Server Pages. We created a color scheme and a faded background illustration using shapes from the Portal logo allowing text overlay to convey the Portal brand.

Working closely with the UI team at Portal, we created a series of mockups:

  • screen layout using PhotoShop
  • Simple screen flows using image maps and html to test screen flows
We used each successive mockup to first validate with stake holders, then test user scenarios with real users. Usability test often reveal well hidden design flaws as test subject after test subject stumble at the same point. Each of these flaws was revisited, addresses and retested. We ascertained the landing page should contain the most pertinent account information (account overview) with links to detail pages.

Visual Design Challenge:
Create a customizable screen layout for the self-service account access for Internet Service Providers customers (end users). Assume ISPs will customize templates using their own graphics to brand their own companies.

These would be replaced by the ISP with their own branding standards.
